Ko e mape
Lingao is a county on the northwestern coast of Hainan, China's southernmost province, and its county town lies a short way inland from the sea. On the map, the urban area forms a compact cluster of streets surrounded by farmland and plantations, with roads running north toward a long, irregular coastline of bays, sandy stretches and small fishing harbours.
The coast here faces the waters where the Qiongzhou Strait opens into the Gulf of Tonkin, and its most prominent point is Lingao Cape, a headland that reaches into the sea north of the town. In 1950 the cape was one of the landing areas used by the People's Liberation Army during the campaign for Hainan Island, a history marked by a memorial there.
Lingao is also distinctive for its language, known as Lingao or Be, spoken by many local residents and quite different from the Hainanese dialect of the rest of the island. A Lingao map poster frames the county town between inland fields and the sea, with the cape as its sharpest point, a quiet coastal geography rendered in clean lines.

The northwestern coastline of Hainan curves in a series of bays and sandy stretches, drawing a long, irregular edge between land and open water.
Fields and plantations surround the county town, their tracks and irrigation lines creating a soft, uneven texture between the urban core and the coast.

For people from Lingao, the map is a reminder of a coast, a language and a home town that feels distinct within Hainan. For others, it is a calm study of a small town set between fields and sea at China's tropical southern edge.
