Lleida is organised around a hill and a river. The old cathedral, La Seu Vella, stands on the hill above the town, and from above you can see the walls and terraces around it as a solid mass rising out of the streets. The medieval quarter runs down its slopes toward the water in narrow, winding lanes.
The Segre River runs along the southern side of the old town, with a riverside promenade and several bridges crossing to the newer districts on the opposite bank. Beyond the river and around the hill, the city grows in regular grids of blocks and wider avenues. Further out, the fields and orchards of the Horta fill the plain.
The Seu Vella was used as a military barracks for over two centuries before it was restored, and it is still the landmark visible across the plain. A Lleida map poster shows the hill at the heart of the city, the river curving past it and the grid spreading out into the farmland.
