Longnan lies in the far south of Gansu province, where the land breaks into deep valleys and steep ridges on the way toward Sichuan. The urban centre, in Wudu district, stretches along the Bailong River, and from above it appears as a narrow ribbon of streets and buildings squeezed between the water and the mountainsides.
That setting shapes everything. Roads run parallel to the river, bridges cross it at intervals, and new districts have been built wherever the valley widens. The surrounding slopes are terraced and farmed, and the region's relatively mild climate allows crops such as olives, unusual for northwestern China.
