Longton is the southernmost of the six towns that joined to form Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. It grew on the pottery industry in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and its map still carries the mark of that era. Tight rows of terraced houses, irregular works sites and converging roads meet at a small town centre.
Longton was known especially for bone china. The Gladstone Pottery Museum preserves a complete Victorian pottery works, with its bottle kilns and cobbled yard. Around it, the street plan shows gradual, piecemeal growth rather than a single design. Narrow streets meet at odd angles, and former industrial land has been put to new uses.
The A50 cuts across the area in a broad curve, and the railway between Stoke and Derby passes through the centre. A Longton map poster captures a distinctive English industrial landscape. The dense terraced streets, the gaps left by old works and the newer road lines all sit together in one frame.
The preserved Victorian pottery works, with its bottle kilns and cobbled yard, is Longton's best-known landmark and a compact block of history near the town centre.
Rows of closely packed terraced houses fill the surrounding neighbourhoods and create the fine, repetitive texture typical of the Potteries towns.
The dual carriageway and the railway cross the town in long curves. They cut through the older street pattern and link Longton to Stoke and Derby.
