Lučenec lies in southern Slovakia, close to the Hungarian border, in the historic region of Novohrad. On a map the town has a clear centre of streets and squares, with a large park at its heart. A ring of later housing estates and industrial areas spreads across the gentle lowland around it.
The town has long been a meeting point of Slovak and Hungarian culture. Its best-known building is the large synagogue, built in the 1920s and restored in the 2010s as a cultural venue. The Calvinist church, with a rooster on its tower, is another familiar landmark of the centre.
