Lufkin is easy to read from above. A highway loop circles the city, and inside it the older grid around downtown gives way to curving subdivisions and commercial strips along the main roads. Outside the loop, the street network quickly thins into forest, farm roads and scattered development, so the city has a clear edge on the map.
Lufkin is the seat of Angelina County, and its economy has long depended on the surrounding pine woods. Timber, paper and oilfield equipment all shaped the town, and Lufkin is home to the Texas Forestry Museum.
