Macia lies in the south of Gaza Province, on the EN1 highway that runs the length of Mozambique. From above, the town is organised around the road. A strip of shops and markets lines the highway, a compact grid of streets sits behind it, and the residential areas thin out into farmland and scattered homesteads on the surrounding sandy plain.
Macia is best known as the turn-off for Praia do Bilene, the lagoon beach resort to the southeast, and many travellers from Maputo pass through on their way to the coast. The lower Limpopo valley, one of the country's key farming areas, lies not far to the north and shapes the agricultural character of the district.
