Magna sits on the west side of Salt Lake County, where the valley's long numbered grid runs up against the northern end of the Oquirrh Mountains. The town grew up as a company community for the copper mills and smelter nearby, and its historic Main Street still keeps the scale of an early twentieth-century mining town. Since 2017 it has been governed as a metro township.
From above, Magna is where two geometries meet. To the east, suburban streets fill the square blocks of the Salt Lake grid. To the west and south, the mountains rise abruptly, and industrial land from the Kennecott operations spreads toward the flats of the Great Salt Lake, including the smelter and its tall stack, a landmark visible across much of the valley.
