Ko e mape
Mamoudzou lies on the east coast of Grande-Terre, the main island of Mayotte, looking across the lagoon toward Petite-Terre and the town of Dzaoudzi. The map shows a narrow belt of streets along the shoreline, broken by small bays and headlands, with neighbourhoods working their way up the hillsides that rise directly behind the coast.
The lagoon defines the setting. Enclosed by a long barrier reef, it surrounds the island with calm, shallow water, and ferries shuttle between Mamoudzou and Petite-Terre, where the airport is located. On land, the main roads follow the coast north and south, while residential streets branch inland along ridges and form a dense, irregular pattern in the valleys.
Mamoudzou is the largest commune and administrative centre of Mayotte, which became an overseas department of France in 2011. Its population has grown quickly, and the town has spread steadily along the coast and uphill. A Mamoudzou map poster captures a place defined by water on one side and steep ground on the other, compact and densely lived in.
The short sea crossing between Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre is part of daily life for residents. On the poster the lagoon between the two shores forms a clear open band.
The main road follows the shore in both directions, a long line linking the town centre with neighbouring villages along the eastern coast.
Streets climb the steep slopes behind the shoreline in irregular branches. They fill the valleys with a dense texture that contrasts with the smooth water in front.

Ko e ha Mamoudzou
For Mahorais living in mainland France or Réunion, and for teachers, doctors and officials who have spent a few years on the island, Mamoudzou stays in the memory. A map of it keeps the lagoon and the hills close.
