Manchar lies in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra, on the highway that runs north from Pune toward Nashik. The town grew along this route, and from above its streets gather on either side of the road, with a denser older core and newer housing spreading into the fields. To the west, the land rises toward the hills of the Sahyadri range.
Manchar is known as an agricultural market town for its surrounding villages, with vegetable and onion trade playing a large part in local life. The wider Ambegaon taluka stretches west into the Western Ghats and includes Bhimashankar, one of the jyotirlinga temples, which makes the area familiar to many pilgrims travelling through.
