Manturovo stands on the Unzha River in the east of Kostroma Oblast, surrounded by the dense forests of northern European Russia. Two lines shape its map. The river curves along the edge of the town, and the railway crosses the landscape and drove much of the settlement's modern growth.
The town grew up around timber and woodworking. Forestry is still its main industry, and plywood production has long been associated with the place. Streets form a loose grid of low-rise blocks and wooden houses. Larger industrial sites sit near the railway, and open land runs down toward the water.
