Marijampolė is the main town of Suvalkija, in the flat, farmed southwest of Lithuania. The Šešupė river runs through it in a series of wide bends. From above, the town spreads along both banks, with the older centre near the river and later residential districts in blocks and courtyards further out.
The town takes its name from a monastery of the Marian Fathers established here in the eighteenth century. Its basilica is associated with Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis, which makes the town a place of pilgrimage. Today the Via Baltica route runs past it, linking Poland with the Baltic capitals.
