Marrakesh is two very different cities on one map. The medina, enclosed by long earthen walls, is a dense maze of narrow alleys, dead ends and courtyards, with few straight lines anywhere. At its centre lies the open square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, and nearby stands the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, a landmark for the whole city.
To the west, the Ville Nouvelle, including Gueliz, was laid out during the French protectorate with broad, straight avenues and roundabouts. The contrast between the tangled medina and the planned grid is one of the most striking features of any North African city map.
