Martin sits in the Turiec basin in northern Slovakia, a wide valley between two mountain ranges: the Malá Fatra to the west and the Veľká Fatra to the east. On a map, the town fills the valley floor with a compact old centre, housing estates of long apartment blocks, and an industrial area, while the forested mountain slopes rise around it with only a few roads.
