Masalani is a town in eastern Kenya, near the lower course of the Tana River, the country's longest river. From above, the landscape is flat and semi-arid, with scrub and open ground. The town forms a compact settlement, with tracks leading out towards the surrounding villages and grazing land.
In this region, water is the main organising feature of the landscape. The river and its seasonal channels set where farming is possible, and much of the surrounding land is used for pastoralism. The town serves as a local centre for trade and services for the wider area.
