Masaya sits on a plateau between Managua and Granada, and on a map its streets form a tight, regular grid around a central square. The western side of town ends abruptly at the steep rim of the Laguna de Masaya, a crater lake whose rounded outline sets a clear, deep edge against the dense blocks.
Beyond the lagoon lies Masaya Volcano National Park, one of the most active volcanic areas in Central America, where visitors can look into a smoking crater.
