Massillon lies in Stark County, west of Canton, on the Tuscarawas River. The river runs roughly north to south through the city, splitting it into east and west sides joined by a series of bridges. Downtown sits close to the water, with a regular street grid extending from it and residential neighbourhoods spreading across the higher ground beyond.
The city grew with the Ohio and Erie Canal in the early nineteenth century, and a towpath trail now follows the river corridor. Steel and other industry later shaped its economy. Massillon is also known for its high school football tradition, including the Tigers and coach Paul Brown. A Massillon map poster puts all of this on one readable sheet.
In black and white, the river and the parallel lines of rail and trail form a strong central axis, and the streets on either side have slightly different textures. Parks and green spaces break up the grid, and the city's edges fade into the farmland and small towns of north-eastern Ohio.
The river runs through the heart of the city in a winding line. It separates the east and west sides and anchors the whole composition.
The route of the old Ohio and Erie Canal survives as a trail along the river corridor. It is a thin line of history running beside the water.
Close to the river, downtown's straight streets and compact blocks form the most regular part of the map, with larger industrial and railway areas nearby.
