Matões is a municipality in eastern Maranhão, in the transition zone of cerrado savanna and palm-rich land that stretches toward the Parnaíba valley and the Piauí border. The town itself is compact. It has a small grid of streets around a central core, with houses built close to the road on narrow lots, as is common in the interior of Brazil's northeast.
From above, the town's regular blocks stand out against a much larger rural area. Unpaved roads and tracks cross the countryside toward farms and smaller communities.
