Mdiq lies on the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco, north of Tetouan, where the land drops from green hills to a long sandy shore. The town stretches along the coast in a narrow band, and streets run parallel to the waterfront, with lanes climbing a short way inland before the slopes become too steep.
It began as a fishing town, and its harbour, with breakwaters making sharp geometric lines against the sea, is still at the centre of the map. In recent decades Mdiq has become a summer resort, and new apartment blocks and holiday developments have spread along the coast.
