Mecheria lies on the high plateaus of western Algeria, in Naâma province, at an elevation of more than a thousand metres. The landscape around it is open steppe: dry grassland, scattered scrub and long views toward the mountain ridges of the Saharan Atlas. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets, with the surrounding land almost empty.
The town grew up as a garrison and railway stop, and the line crossing the plateau toward the south still runs past it. Its layout reflects that origin, with straight streets and regular blocks rather than a winding old medina. Today it is a local centre for a region shaped by pastoralism and the grazing of sheep.
