Meylan lies just northeast of Grenoble, on the right bank of the Isère in the Grésivaudan valley. On a map it forms a long band between the river and the mountains: flat land near the water, then streets that climb in curves and switchbacks toward the limestone wall of the Saint-Eynard, the southern edge of the Chartreuse massif.
The town is largely residential, with houses, small apartment buildings and gardens spread over the lower slopes, and many cul-de-sacs following the lie of the land.
