Mifune lies southeast of Kumamoto city, where the plain around the city starts to rise into hills. The map shows a compact town centre along a river, rice fields spreading across the flat land around it and wooded hills closing in from the east. The roads follow the valleys, and small villages dot the edges of the farmland.
