Minamishimabara covers the southern end of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu. The city was formed in 2006 by merging eight towns, so it has no single centre. Instead, a string of coastal communities is spread around the peninsula's southern shore. The Amakusa islands lie across the water, and the volcanic slopes of Mount Unzen rise to the north.
On a map this shape is unusual and appealing. A coastal road traces the shoreline, small harbours and town centres appear at intervals, and farmland climbs inland in narrow terraces and fields. Streams run down from the higher ground to the sea. The result looks less like a city grid than a necklace of settlements along a curving coast.
The area carries real historical weight. The ruins of Hara Castle, the site of the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637 and 1638, are here, and they are part of the UNESCO-listed Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region. A Minamishimabara map poster brings that history together with today's quiet coastline and farmland.

Former town centres such as Kuchinotsu, Arie and Fukae sit at intervals along the shore. A coastal road links them and gives the map its long, curving spine.
Inland, fields and terraces climb toward the foothills of Unzen and break the hillsides into fine, layered patterns that contrast with the open water beside them.
