Mochudi lies in the Kgatleng District north-east of Gaborone. From above it does not follow a strict grid; instead homesteads, lanes and compounds spread loosely across the land, and the town wraps around Phuthadikobo Hill, whose rocky outline rises above the older part of the settlement. The Notwane River passes nearby, a seasonal line through dry country.
Mochudi is the traditional capital of the Bakgatla people, and its kgotla, the customary meeting place, remains central to community life. The Phuthadikobo Museum, housed in an old school building on the hill, records the history of the town and the Kgatleng region.
