Ko e mape
Mogoditshane sits just west of Gaborone in Botswana's Kweneng District, close enough that the two settlements now almost merge. Officially it is still called a village, but it has grown far beyond that label. Over the last few decades it has become one of the most populous settlements in the country, as people working in the capital have settled on the land beyond the city boundary.
That growth shows clearly from above. Main roads pull traffic in towards Gaborone, while newer residential areas spread out in all directions. Some are laid out in regular plots and others follow older, looser tracks. A Mogoditshane map poster shows a place still being drawn: dense in some sections, open in others, with the street pattern visibly changing from one area to the next.
The landscape around it is typical of south-eastern Botswana, with dry bushland, low ridges and very little surface water. With no river or coast to organise it, the settlement's shape comes almost entirely from roads and land allocation. That makes the map honest and graphic, a direct record of how a community has spread outward from its connection to the capital.
The main routes linking Mogoditshane with Gaborone form the strongest lines on the map. They show how closely the settlement's life is tied to the neighbouring city.
Recently developed areas appear as neat, repeated rows of plots and access roads. They sit in visible contrast to the older, more irregular parts of the village.
At the outer margins the streets simply stop and give way to empty land. The edge of the settlement becomes part of the design.
