Mokokchūng is in the hills of Nagaland, in the far north-east of India. The town is built along a series of ridges, and its roads follow them closely. They curve around hillsides, loop back on themselves and climb from one level to the next. On a map, the settlement looks like a web thrown over high ground, with steep valleys forming open spaces between its parts.
The town is the main cultural centre of the Ao Naga people, and it is known for the Moatsu festival, celebrated in early May after sowing. It is also regarded as one of the intellectual centres of Nagaland, having produced many of the state's writers, educators and public figures.
