Monserrato sits just north of Cagliari, on the flat southern end of the Campidano plain. From above it is a compact grid of low blocks, with straight streets running between courtyard houses in the traditional Campidanese pattern. To one side, the large footprint of the university campus and hospital breaks the rhythm with broad buildings, car parks and access roads.
The town has an unusual administrative history. For several decades in the twentieth century it was absorbed into the city of Cagliari, and it regained its independence as a separate municipality only in 1991. Today it forms part of the continuous urban area around the Sardinian capital, yet its street pattern still reads as a town of its own.
