Mulchén lies in the Biobío region of south-central Chile, in the agricultural land between the Central Valley and the foothills of the Andes. Like many Chilean towns founded in the nineteenth century, it is organised around a regular grid of square blocks with a central plaza, and the map shows that order clearly against the looser pattern of the countryside.
