Mustang lies in Canadian County, on the southwestern edge of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Its map is a textbook example of the American land survey. Major roads follow the section lines at one-mile intervals, forming a large, even grid, and within each square the suburban neighbourhoods create their own smaller patterns of loops, curves and cul-de-sacs.
That two-level structure is what makes Mustang interesting from above. The straight arterials give the town a firm framework, while the residential streets inside them are softer and more varied. Open land still remains between some developments, so the grid appears only partly filled, a picture of a community that has grown steadily as the metropolitan area spread west.
Mustang began as a small community in farm country and has become a residential town for families working across the Oklahoma City area. Its layout records that change, from rural sections to suburban subdivisions. A Mustang map poster shows the result clearly, with each square of the grid telling a slightly different story of development.
Arterial roads run north–south and east–west at one-mile intervals. On the poster they form a strong, regular framework that holds the whole composition together.
Inside each section, residential streets loop and branch into cul-de-sacs. These softer shapes fill the grid squares and give the map a detailed, almost woven texture.
Between neighbourhoods and at the edge of town, unbuilt fields remain. They leave calm empty spaces on the map and show where the town still meets the surrounding plains.
