Naxçıvan is the capital of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan separated from the rest of the country. The city spreads across a gently sloping plain, with wide avenues and blocks of twentieth-century planning around an older core. The Nakhchivanchay river runs beside it, and to the south the land descends toward the Aras valley and the border.
The city's best-known monument is the twelfth-century Momine Khatun Mausoleum, a tall ten-sided tower built by the architect Ajami Nakhchivani and covered in intricate brick and tile patterns. Local tradition also links the region with Noah, and a small mausoleum associated with him is among the places visitors are shown.
A Naxçıvan map poster reads as a planned city in a dry landscape: broad, straight roads, parks and squares laid out with room to spare, and the soft line of the river valley. Around the edges the street network thins quickly, showing how clearly the city is defined against the surrounding plain.
Wide central avenues cross the city in long straight lines, opening into squares and parks that appear as calm, open shapes within the residential pattern.
The Nakhchivanchay valley runs beside the city, a meandering line that softens the regular geometry of the street plan and leads the eye south toward the Aras.
The older quarter around the Momine Khatun Mausoleum has a finer, less regular grain, a small area of short streets inside the broader modern layout.
