Ko e mape
Néma is the capital of Hodh Ech Chargui, the easternmost region of Mauritania, close to the border with Mali. It marks the end of the Route de l'Espoir, the long highway that crosses the country from Nouakchott. On a map the road arrives from the west as a single decisive line before breaking up into the town's streets.
The town sits on the edge of the Sahel, surrounded by sandy ground, rocky slopes and watercourses that fill only in the rainy season. Its streets form a loose grid of wide, sandy blocks, and the older quarters are more tightly packed. Beyond them the map opens into empty land, and that emptiness is an essential part of the picture.
A Néma map poster suits people from the Hodh who live in Nouakchott or abroad, and travellers who have made the long drive east. The design is spare and graphic: a small cluster of streets, a single road reaching toward it and a great deal of quiet space around the edges.
The highway from Nouakchott ends here after crossing the whole country. Its final approach draws a long, clean line across the poster toward the town.
Streets are laid out in broad, fairly regular blocks with generous gaps between them, a pattern common to towns across the Sahara and the Sahel.
Rocky ground and dry watercourses around the town leave faint, irregular marks on the map. They frame the settlement with a strong sense of vast space.
