Ko e mape
Nevel'sk lies on the south-western coast of Sakhalin Island, facing the Tatar Strait. On a map it is long and narrow, a ribbon of streets running along the shore with hills rising close behind. The harbour, protected by breakwaters, forms the clearest geometric shape in the composition, projecting into the sea from the town's waterfront.
The town was founded during the Japanese period of southern Sakhalin under the name Honto and was renamed after the navigator Gennady Nevelskoy. Fishing and the port have long shaped its life. In 2007 an earthquake caused serious damage here, and parts of the town were rebuilt. The harbour breakwater is known for a colony of sea lions.
A Nevel'sk map poster reduces all of this to lines and water: the straight coastal strip, the angular harbour, and short streets climbing into valleys between the hills. It is an austere, maritime image, well suited to anyone with ties to Sakhalin or to the wider Russian Far East.
The port's breakwaters reach into the Tatar Strait in sharp, angular lines, the most recognisable shape on the map and the famous resting place of sea lions.
Squeezed between sea and hills, the town extends along the shore in a narrow strip, with the main streets running parallel to the coastline.
Short streets push inland along small valleys between the hills, breaking the long coastal line into a sequence of narrow fingers.
