Ko e mape
Nev’yansk lies in Sverdlovsk Oblast, on the eastern slopes of the Middle Urals, north of Yekaterinburg. It grew in the early eighteenth century around an ironworks founded by the state and soon handed to Nikita Demidov, who started one of Russia's great industrial dynasties. Like many Urals factory towns, it was built around a dam and the pond behind it.
On the map, the pond on the Neyva River is the most striking shape. It is a long body of water stretching away from the dam, with the historic centre gathered at its lower end. Streets of wooden houses spread along the shores and slopes, later districts extend outward in straighter blocks, and forest covers the land beyond.
The Nevyansk Leaning Tower, built by the Demidovs in the eighteenth century, leans visibly and has become the town's emblem. The town is also known as a historic centre of Old Believer icon painting. A Nev’yansk map poster frames the dam, the pond and the old streets around the tower as the core of a classic Urals composition.
The long reservoir created by the ironworks dam dominates the map, its shoreline stretching away from the town centre into the forest.
The historic centre by the dam, where the Demidov tower stands, marks the point from which the whole town grew.
Rows of small plots with private houses line the slopes near the pond, a fine, even texture typical of Urals factory towns.
