New Mills sits on the western edge of the Peak District, close to the border between Derbyshire and Greater Manchester. Its defining feature is the Torrs, a steep sandstone gorge cut by the River Goyt and the River Sett, which meet at the bottom of the town. Streets, houses and mills were built on the ledges above, so the plan steps down toward the water.
The town grew with the cotton and printing mills that used the rivers for power, and the ruins of several of them still lie in the gorge. Since 1999 the Millennium Walkway has carried a path along the gorge wall on a raised steel deck, and it is now one of the town's best-known sights. Two railway lines and the Peak Forest Canal also pass nearby.
A New Mills map poster shows why the town feels so layered in person. The gorge appears as a sharp break in the street pattern, bridges stitch the two sides together, and the rivers curl through the middle. Around the edges the terraces give way to fields and moorland, drawn in fine black lines on a clean ground.
The steep gorge at the heart of town is the map's central feature. It is a narrow cut where the Goyt and Sett meet, and where the old mill buildings once stood.
A raised walkway follows the gorge wall above the River Goyt and completes a riverside route that the cliff had blocked. It is small on the map but central to the town's story.
Railway lines cross the valley on either side of the centre, and the Peak Forest Canal runs close by. Their long, gentle curves contrast with the tight streets above the gorge.
