North Highlands is an unincorporated community in Sacramento County, north of the city of Sacramento. The land is flat, and most of the streets follow a regular grid of blocks and arterial roads laid out in the decades after the Second World War. On a map, the pattern is even and orderly, with straight lines running north–south and east–west to the edge of the frame.
The community grew alongside McClellan Air Force Base, which closed in 2001 and has since been redeveloped as a business park and airfield. Its long runway and large rectangular grounds remain the most striking feature of the area from above. They cut a clear open space into the surrounding residential grid.
