Nsawam is a town in Ghana's Eastern Region, a short distance north of Accra. It sits by the Densu River, and much of its shape comes from the transport lines that pass through it: the main road towards Kumasi and the old railway. On a map the town stretches along these routes, with residential streets branching out into the green, gently rolling land around it.
The town has long been a trading and farming centre. The surrounding area is known for fruit, especially pineapples, and for processing agricultural produce. Nsawam is also widely known in Ghana as the site of a large prison, which gives the name a particular association for many people.
