Ko e mape
Olympia sits at the southern end of Puget Sound, around the head of Budd Inlet. The downtown grid occupies a stretch of land between the inlet's two arms, with the port on one side and the waterfront on the other. On the map, water defines almost every edge, and the streets fit into the spaces the shoreline leaves open.
Just south of downtown, Capitol Lake, formed where the Deschutes River was dammed near its mouth, fills a long basin below the hill of the state capitol campus. The dome of the Legislative Building stands above it as the city's best-known landmark. An Olympia map poster brings capitol, lake and inlet together in a single frame.
West of the inlet, residential neighbourhoods climb wooded slopes, and the Evergreen State College campus lies further out among the trees. Percival Landing, a boardwalk along the downtown waterfront, traces the edge of the inlet. The city takes its name from the Olympic Mountains, visible across the Sound on clear days, and much of its character still rests on water and forest.
The inlet reaches into the heart of the city, dividing into two arms around downtown and giving the map its most distinctive shape.
A long, smooth lake lies below the capitol campus, framed by paths and parks, its outline a calm counterpoint to the inlet's irregular shore.
The state capitol grounds sit on a bluff above the lake, with formal paths and lawns laid out around the domed Legislative Building.
