Oskarshamn lies on Sweden's east coast, on the Kalmar Sound, where a sheltered inlet cuts into the rocky shore. The town wraps around that harbour. Its centre sits close to the water, and residential districts climb the low hills behind it. Offshore, the coast breaks into small islands and skerries, so the map has an intricate, fragmented edge.
The town is named after King Oscar I, and its central streets follow a fairly regular nineteenth-century plan. The harbour is still busy, with ferries sailing to Visby on Gotland. Out in the sound, the granite island of Blå Jungfrun is a national park, and a nuclear power station lies on the coast to the north.
An Oskarshamn map poster is at its best when it includes the harbour and part of the archipelago. The regular town blocks, the deep inlet and the scattered islands together make a composition with both order and movement. In Blueprint, it reads almost like a nautical chart.
A deep, sheltered inlet brings the sea right into the town centre. Quays and piers along its edges give the map sharp, geometric details.
Small rocky islands and inlets dot the coast on either side of town, making the shoreline one of the most detailed parts of the print.
Ferries leave the harbour for Visby, so Oskarshamn is a familiar gateway for many travellers heading to Gotland.
