Ko e mape
Ottumwa straddles the Des Moines River in Wapello County, and the river gives the city its main shape: a wide curving channel with the downtown on the north bank and neighbourhoods spread across both sides. From above, streets on the flat near the water follow a regular grid, then bend and break up as they climb the bluffs that rise from the valley.
Along the river, a long stretch of parkland and open ground separates much of the city from the water, and several bridges tie north and south together. Rail lines run through the valley as well, a reminder of the city's history as a meatpacking and manufacturing town. Industry still sits along the edges of the map in larger blocks.
Ottumwa has a small place in American television: it was the hometown of Radar O'Reilly in M*A*S*H, and the show mentioned the city regularly. An Ottumwa map poster shows the more lasting outline, a river town where grid, bluff and floodplain meet in a clear and readable pattern.
The river crosses the city in a broad arc, dividing north and south Ottumwa. Its width and the green space along it make it the dominant line on the poster.
Away from the valley, streets climb the surrounding hills and lose their straight lines, curving along the slopes in a looser, more organic pattern.
On the flat ground near downtown the blocks are regular and compact, a tidy Midwestern grid set against the curve of the river.
