Owasso lies northeast of Tulsa along the U.S. 169 corridor, and its map is a clear example of how American suburbs grew on the land survey grid. Major roads follow section lines exactly one mile apart, forming large squares, and inside each square the residential streets bend into loops and cul-de-sacs.
The town's name is often said to come from an Osage word meaning the end or the turnaround, since it began where an early railway line ended. The original small town centre around that line is still visible, now surrounded by far larger modern neighbourhoods.
