Padangsidempuan lies in the highlands of southern North Sumatra, in a valley surrounded by hills. The town centre sits on the lower ground, and its streets follow the valley's shape. The town is a centre for the Angkola Batak region. It is often called the city of salak, after the snakefruit grown widely in the surrounding hills.
