Panguipulli sits on the western shore of the lake of the same name in Chile's Los Ríos Region. It is the main town in the Siete Lagos area, a chain of lakes set among forest and volcanic peaks. On clear days, the snow-covered volcanoes to the east are visible across the water.
The town follows the lakeshore. Streets run down toward the water, and the waterfront and beaches form a long, curving edge on the map. Inland, the blocks climb gently before giving way to farmland and forest. The lake occupies a large part of any frame and gives the composition broad, open space.
