Paranaguá sits on the southern shore of Paranaguá Bay, a large, sheltered estuary on the coast of Paraná in southern Brazil. The bay is fringed with mangroves and scattered with islands, and on a map its irregular, branching shoreline dominates the scene. The city itself lies on fairly flat ground between the water and the forested slopes of the Serra do Mar.
Founded in the seventeenth century, Paranaguá is one of the oldest towns in Paraná, and its historic centre along the Itiberê River still holds colonial churches and houses. Today the city is best known for its port, one of the largest in Brazil and a major export gateway for soybeans and other agricultural goods from the interior.
A Paranaguá map poster pairs two very different forms: the modest, irregular streets of the old town and the long, straight quays and storage yards of the port. From the waterfront, boats leave for Ilha do Mel and other islands, which appear on the map as quiet shapes in the open water of the bay.
The estuary spreads out to the north and east of the city in a broad, irregular expanse of open water, mangrove channels and islands.
Along the shore, piers, silos and container yards form a long band of large, regular shapes, clearly distinct from the older urban fabric inland.
The historic centre lines the Itiberê River, a narrow channel where the town's oldest streets meet the water and small boats come and go.
