Ko e mape
Parlier is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley, south-east of Fresno, surrounded by some of the most productive farmland in California. Its map is a lesson in geometry. The town itself forms a compact grid of streets, and around it the same straight lines continue outwards as field boundaries and rural roads, dividing the land into regular squares of vineyards, orchards and row crops.
Agriculture is the reason the town exists and remains its economic base, with many residents working in the fields and packing houses of the valley. Parlier is also home to the University of California's Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, a large research farm that studies crops grown across the region. Its grounds appear as another set of carefully ruled plots on the edge of town.
Seen from above, the pattern is calm, rhythmic and very typical of the Central Valley. A Parlier map poster shows the town grid within its agricultural surroundings, a clear picture of how community and land fit together here. It is a good fit for families with roots in the valley, for farmworkers and growers, and for anyone who knows the long straight roads of Fresno County.
Parlier's streets follow a simple rectilinear plan, with a small central area of shops and public buildings surrounded by blocks of homes.
Vineyards, orchards and fields extend in every direction in regular squares, separated by straight roads that continue the lines of the town grid.
The University of California's agricultural research centre occupies a large area of experimental plots, visible on the map as finely divided land near the town.
