Pátzcuaro sits in the highlands of Michoacán at more than two thousand metres, a short distance south of the lake that shares its name. The historic centre is a grid of whitewashed adobe houses with red-tiled roofs, laid out in the sixteenth century and gently tilted by the terrain. Two squares anchor it: Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, one of the most spacious in Mexico, and the smaller Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra.
Vasco de Quiroga, the first bishop of Michoacán, made the town the seat of his diocese and organised Purépecha communities around the lake by craft, a legacy still visible in the region's pottery, copper and lacquer work. The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Salud stands a few blocks from the main square, and streets climb from there toward the hills that frame the town.
Northward the streets loosen and run down toward the lakeshore, where the island of Janitzio rises from the water, known for its Day of the Dead vigils. A Pátzcuaro map poster framed to include the lake shows both the dense colonial core and the wide, quiet water beyond, a pairing that gives the composition unusual depth.
The main square forms a large, clear rectangle in the centre of the grid, lined with arcades and old mansions, and on the map it opens a generous space among the tight colonial blocks.
The irregular shoreline to the north, with its islands and inlets, adds a broad expanse of water that contrasts with the fine texture of the town's streets.
South and west of the centre, the regular grid bends to follow rising ground, and streets begin to curve and climb toward the wooded hills around the town.

Ko e ha Pátzcuaro
Pátzcuaro stays with people: a Day of the Dead visit, a stay in an old house off the plaza, a boat to Janitzio. A map of the town recalls that slow rhythm without relying on photographs, and it reads well in almost any room.
