Patzún is a town in the department of Chimaltenango, in the western highlands of Guatemala, on a route leading toward the Lake Atitlán area. Most of its inhabitants are Kaqchikel Maya, and the town lies at high altitude among small farms growing vegetables and maize. On the map it forms a compact, regular grid centred on the main square.
The plaza and its colonial-era church are the heart of the town, and the Spanish-style grid extends from them in blocks of fairly even size. Beyond the last streets, the landscape breaks up into small cultivated plots, footpaths and ravines typical of the highlands. Patzún is known for its Corpus Christi celebrations, when the streets are decorated with elaborate arches of produce and flowers.
