Phaltan sits in the eastern part of Satara district in Maharashtra, on the fertile plains watered by the Nira river and its canal system. On a map the town has a clearly defined historic core, with narrow lanes gathered close together, surrounded by later, more open neighbourhoods and roads leading out into farmland.
It was once the seat of a princely state ruled by the Naik Nimbalkar family, and some palaces and temples from that period remain in the old town. Today the area is known for sugarcane cultivation and sugar production, supported by the irrigation canals that cross the surrounding countryside.
