Pimentel sits on the Pacific coast of northern Peru, a short distance west of Chiclayo. The shoreline here is long and fairly straight, backed by dry coastal desert, and the town's streets form a regular grid that runs right up to the beach.
It has long been a beach resort for the Chiclayo area, and its pier reaches out into the sea as a thin line on the map. Local fishermen are known for the caballitos de totora, small reed boats that have been used on this coast for a very long time.
