Pithampur lies in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, south-west of Indore, on the flat black-soil country of the Malwa plateau. Its map is unusual for an Indian town of its size. Instead of a dense old centre, it is dominated by large rectangular industrial plots divided by wide, straight roads. Residential colonies and older villages are scattered between them, often right beside factory walls.
The town grew into one of the largest industrial areas in central India. It is often called the Detroit of India because so many carmakers and their suppliers are based here. A special economic zone and several industrial sectors spread across the area, and major highways connect the factories to Indore and to markets across the country.
A Pithampur map poster reads almost like an engineering drawing: long boundary lines, big blocks, and the occasional cluster of older lanes where a village came before the factories. It is a fitting print for people who work in the industrial sectors, and for anyone who likes the clean logic of a planned working landscape.
Large, regular plots along straight service roads fill much of the map. They form a grid far coarser than any residential neighbourhood.
Older villages survive between the factories as small, irregular knots of lanes. These are the only places where the street pattern becomes dense and informal.
Wide roads cross the flat Malwa landscape in long, direct lines, linking the industrial area with Indore to the north-east.
