Poggibonsi sits in the Elsa valley in the heart of Tuscany, roughly midway between Florence and Siena. Unlike the hilltop towns around it, most of today's Poggibonsi spreads across the valley floor, where the river, the railway and the Florence–Siena expressway run close together. The result on the map is a compact, practical town plan with a clear linear grain along the valley.
Above the town rises the hill of Poggio Imperiale, where the Medici began a large fortress designed by Giuliano da Sangallo in the late fifteenth century; its long walls still trace a distinctive outline. Much of the historic centre was damaged by bombing in the Second World War, so the streets mix medieval remnants with postwar reconstruction.
San Gimignano's towers lie only a short drive to the west, and vineyards and olive groves roll out on every side. A Poggibonsi map poster shows the valley's structure clearly: dense streets along the Elsa, the fortress walls on their hill, and country roads fanning out toward the villages of Chianti and the Val d'Elsa.
The Medici fortress walls enclose a wide hilltop above the centre, and their angular outline appears on the map as one of the most distinctive shapes in the whole valley.
River, railway and the Florence–Siena expressway all follow the valley floor, bundling together into strong parallel lines that give the town its linear structure.
Postwar reconstruction left a mix of old lanes and newer, straighter streets in the centre, a layered pattern that records the town's history directly in its plan.

Ko e ha Poggibonsi
Poggibonsi is a practical base for exploring San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti, and many travellers spend more time there than they expect. A map of it recalls those days, while residents may simply want a clean portrait of their own town.
